A letter from Miriam, Home Director in Uganda
Dear HALO Supporters,
Many Greetings from Africa! Thank you for supporting our home for
girls in great need. Here in Kampala, Uganda conditions for these at
risk young girls have worsened. In the 80′s, prostitutes used to live
in shanty urban slums and were mature women in their 20′s and 30′s. By
the 90′s, it had drastically changed to the main hotels, bars, and the
streets around them. Now it is being practiced in the homes where
people live. It has become a way of survival for young girls due to
difficult family backgrounds and environment. The government has
failed to control the state of prostitution, and the age of this
marginalized group has dropped to 10 years old.
I am very passionate about this group of HALO girls because they are so young.
They feel rejected. I need to position myself in a way that will share
love, compassion, rehabilitation and hopefully one day their healthy
resettlement into society with me.
When I look at the girls I am living with, I see the vision of
HALO come true. “Barbara,” a 14-year-old girl living in our home,
shocked me one day when she told me her story of working on the
streets for one entire year to collect money for school, yet it was not
enough. Now she is in school, thanks to HALO, and her life has
completely changed. Thank you for rescuing her from prostitution.
You are making a huge difference.
Thank you, thank you. Miriam
